Benefits of Clumping Cat Litter
By Darren Davis

Clumping cat litter was first introduced to the U.S. in the mid-eighties. It has become very popular with cat lovers because it makes scooping incredibly easy. It works as moisture forms hard pieces which stays intact when the litter is being cleaned. Besides ease of scooping, it also reduces the necessity for disposing on a weekly basis. Most clumping cat litter only needs to be completely changed out every four weeks or so, and this is only necessary because like any litter, it will eventually have a build up of bacteria that can be harmful to cats. It is also advantageous because it is generally quite effective against odor.

Most cats take well to clumping cat litter, because it is a fine grit, and gentler on delicate paws than clay litter and other alternatives. It seems to track through the house less, too, which is great for cat owners who find themselves sweeping and vacuuming up kitty litter grains each day.

A new type of biodegradable clumping cat litter has been developed recently that is made from pine dust, recycled newspaper or wheat. The biodegradable version is an excellent choice because instead of disposing of it in conventional ways and having it end up in a landfill; it can be composted (although not for your vegetable garden). Composting biodegradable litter will help to enrich the soil of your flower gardens, or you can simply dig it in to your yard where it will biodegrade and enrich the earth (scoop the poop out first).

The advent of clumping cat litter has been a boon to cat owners who dislike having to change conventional litter on a weekly basis and who don't like the way cat urine absorbs into clay litter but is difficult to get out. Most cats seem to like it, too. If you are considering changing from conventional litter to clumping cat litter, make it a gradual change, as cats will adapt better than if you make a major switch all in one day.
