Many types of cat litter are available today. I have chosen to use clumping litter for my cats. Clumping litter has offers many benefits and a few disadvantages that you will need to consider when deciding on a cat litter to use.
Litter box cleaning is easier with clumping litter which accounts for its popularity. The cat's waste combines with the litter to form clumps that are easily scooped out. Odor issues are reduced if clumping litter is used. There are brands that actually contain deodorizing scents or charcoal to help mask odors. Since the odor-causing waste is being scooped out regularly, there isn't much left to produce cat-box smell. Cats often prefer the texture of clumping litter since it is softer for their paws. And, you may prefer clumping litter for the price as scooping makes the clumping litter last longer before requiring you to entirely replace the litter with fresh litter.
Some clumping litters have added bonuses such as antibacterial action that further helps reduce odors. Some litters are unscented if you don't like added scents. Other clumping litters are no track or low track to help with the issue of cats tracking the litter through your home. Some even allow you to flush your scooped waste down your toilet. I haven't liked the generic clumping litters that I have tried. They tend not to last as long as the more expensive brands, and the clumps don't hold together as well. Tidy Cat Multiple Cat has worked the best for me, and I really like the new version that comes in the blue bucket. It seems to smell better than the version that comes in the red bucket.
Clumping litters do have some drawbacks. If your cat eats litter, then you will want to choose a litter that is safe for ingestion. Clumping litter could be harmful in this case. Clumping litters are more easily tracked through your home than some other litter choices. Also, clumping litter can be more dusty that other litter types, although the dust level varies by brand. You may have to try several brands before finding one that your cat likes as clumping litters vary in features and quality.
Your cat has the final say on what type of litter you choose. If she is not satisfied, she may refuse to use the litter box until you provide an acceptable brand of litter. Clumping litter often proves to be the best cat litter for many cat households.
