Cat Scratching and Fighting If the cats are scratching to come into the same room as you ...you must ignore and not reward their behavior by letting them into the room. Cats really don't like the feel and noise or tin foil, trying putting some tin foil on the area of the carpet when they scratch and hopefully this should deter them. As for the climbing on the counter, cats are predatory animals and instinctively want to climb on high places. Cats really don't like the smell of citrus! You could try soaking some clothes with citrus and placing them on the area where they climb, the smell will hopefully deter your cat form the shelves. Try buying a climbing perch designed for cats to climb and hide on! Usually they do that when it is mad at you, but usually it doesn't progress as far as your cat has taken it. Something is upsetting her very much. Did something traumatic happen when you were gone? Did something scare her badly? It sounds like she is punishing you for something. Is something different in the home? Even something minor? They are like kids, they have temper tantrums and try to see what they can get away with. Usually that is their basic personality and they are not going to change. You just have to 'work around' it. Scold or punish him when he gets mad. Say "NO! Knock it off!" firmly and loudly, then ignore him. When he is nice, then pet him. He has to associate his temper with no petting or attention. The same when he is being a bully. If there is no fur flying or blood being shed then I wouldn't worry too much about your other cat. That is kitty communication and he is reminding her that he is 'boss' and she is letting him.
